Senior citizens would like to be active, but with old age comes problems like weak joints, reduced bone density, frozen shoulders, hypertension, circulation issues, auto-immune conditions, arthritis, balance issues etc. The main focus of yoga practice for elders is to help them carry out their day-to-day activities well. It is essential to make them understand the objective of the practice before starting the class and allow them to experience a particular practice fully before rushing into another one. Simplifying the yoga practice is important for elders, but most of them are good enough to practice all kinds of spinal movements. So it is important to offer them all kinds of spinal movements with appropriate adaptations and tools like chair, blocks, belts, and bolsters. The spine is not just a physical structure, but energy center too. Appropriately working with the spine and core musculature not only help the seniors to keep the overall structure stable but it truly helps to improve their energy levels and prevent balance issues. By becoming aware of the spine, the life force gets directed inwards. It is also important to improve memory and care for the sense organs to live a fulfilled life.
Right practice for a particular condition need not be the right practice for the particular individual. Respecting the individual limitations, feelings, emotions, pace of practice and adapting the practices according to the individual is the key.
